Nongpoh is a town in the state of Meghalaya. It is also the district administrative headquarters of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The town forms the northern lower portion of the East Khasi hills in Meghalaya.

The town of Nongpoh is located at an average elevation of 485 meters. It is located around 53 kms from Shillong, the capital of the state of Meghalaya.

Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary

The Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya. It is situated near Nongpoh. The sanctuary lies in a global biodiversity hotspot. The sanctuary is famous for having varied flora and fauna. The Nongkhyllem Wildlife sanctuary is located near Lailad village which is around 80 kms from Shillong. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 29 sq km.

The Nongkhyllem Wildlife sanctuary has varied flora and fauna. It is home to a large number of mammals, reptiles and birds. The golden cat, golden langur and hoolock gibbon are endemic to the sanctuary. Royal Bengal tiger, Indian Bison, Himalayan black bear and clouded leopard are also found in the sanctuary. The place ideal for bird watching is visited by bird species like brown hornbill, Manipur bush quail and rufous necked hornbill. The sanctuary is an ideal place for bird watching. The best time for bird watching is on March/April during the nesting season.

Orchid Lake ResortIt is located in Umiam about 14 kms from Umroi Airport. The resort gives a panoramic view of the Umiam Lake with the hilly landscape beneath it. The resort attracts tourists from across the area to the beauty it beholds.

This park is situated adjacent to the Orchid Lake Resort. The park is beautified with lawns and gardens, orchids and aviary.

Road Side Market

The Road Side Market is the most popular market of Nongpoh. The fruit stalls are a major attraction of the town with luscious fruits. There are also a variety of vegetables available here which are grown on the hills and plains. The Nongpoh market was once famous for venison, parrots and mynas pet stalls. One can also buy orchids, handicrafts and local articles from the market.

Lum Sohpetbneng

Lum Sohpetbneng is a mythological significant place located around 40 kms from the district headquarters Nongpoh. The place has a beautiful legendary peak which is named as Naval or Heaven. The navel heavenly umbilical peak symbolizes the deep rooted spiritual belief of the Hynniewtrep: the Seven huts people predominating the West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills districts of East Meghalaya who descended to Earth from a golden vine bridge atop the sacred U Lum Sohpetbneng peak, to be crowned rulers of creations of the divine creator- U Blei.

According to Khasi mythology, it is believed that this is an ancient golden staircase which links heaven to earth. As per the belief, in golden days, there were sixteen families who ascended and descended the staircase, but seven families decided to stay back on Earth. As such, God granted their wish. This peak is situated on the Shillong-Guwahati road and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding and the horizon. This place has an aura of sacred and religious values. The Golden Bridge signifies the human golden and soul in communion with the Divine Creator.
